The Division manages functions associated with staff recruitment, background investigation, development and training; agency accreditation; internal investigations and inspections; records management; information technology; media/community relations; research and legal affairs.
Administrative Services Division

This division is responsible for administrative and support services for the department as a whole, including procurement, institutional food services, stores management, budget and accounting, payroll and personal records and inmate accounts.
Detention Division

The Division is responsible for the security and care of both persons arrested for crimes in the City and awaiting pretrial court proceedings or trial, and those persons convicted of ordinance and misdemeanor offenses and sentenced to serve time. The Division manages the custody of prisoners during proceedings in the respective courts and during visits or stays in health facilities. The Detention Division is also responsible for boarding federal and state inmates awaiting pretrial court proceedings, trial, or sentencing in other jurisdictions.
Inmate Programs & Services

The Division is responsible for providing a variety of inmate services and programs, including mental health services, religious programs, the inmate classification system, substance abuse programs, literacy training, the grievance and complaint system and assessment services for Community Court.
Inmate Medical Services

The Division is responsible for providing medical and dental care to inmates. An estimated 70% of the inmates evidence substance abuse problems and 15% manifest a mental health disorder.
Statistics
- The Department of Corrections has five operating divisions that are responsible for the management of the Court Detention Center, Grady Detention Center, and City Detention Center.
- The main jail or Atlanta City Detention Center incorporates the progressive “direct supervision” model of design and management and was recognized by the American Concrete Institute as the best new high-rise building in Georgia in 1994. It is 17 stories tall and 471,000 square feet in size.
- In 2005, the Department provided custody of 43,931 offenders arrested by more than a dozen local, state and federal law enforcement agencies.
- in 2005 the Department managed 7,742 offenders sentenced by city courts to terms of confinement.
- In 2005, the Department also boarded 3,910 federal prisoners to generate revenue which offset city costs.
- In 2005, the Department averaged 904 offenders in custody per day.
- The Department has 603 employees, including 503 sworn officers.
- In 2005, the Department collected $9,143, 422 in other agency prisoner boarding fees.
- In 2005, the Department collected $2,877, 122 in offender chargeback and surcharge fees.
