Overview

The Commission on Aging addresses special needs for the elderly, as it relates to City services delivery; including, but not limited to: traffic and transportation (pedestrian walks, traffic signals, etc.), solid waste services and public safety issues. The Commission was established by a resolution enacted by the  Atlanta City Council, 01-R-1450

MEETINGS

Commission on Aging Meetings are held the third Tuesday of each month, 10:00am to 12:00pm at City Hall (Atrium building, 55 Trinity Avenue, SW Atlanta, GA 30303), in Committee room 1.

Committees

Reflecting the Commission’s primary interests, each commission member serves on one or more of the following committees: Crime Prevention and Public Safety, Housing, Information and Education, Recreation/Leisure/Employment, Sanitation/Public Services, Social Support Services, and Transportation.

The officers comprise the Executive Committee. All members are considered ex-officio members of the Executive Committee

Current Projects

In 2009, the Commission will focus on two (2) initiatives:

  • encouraging implementation of a 14 point senior zone policy to improve the safety of seniors through improvements to traffic control devices, signage, sidewalks, and transit access adapted to the special needs of older citizens; and
  • Improved compliance with City of Atlanta Code of Ordinances requirement that in all high-rise residential structures for the elderly and handicapped, for evacuation purposes, the room numbers of all non-ambulatory residents be posted, and identifying placards be affixed to their doors
