commissioner joe basista


Joe Basista assumed leadership of the City of Atlanta’s Department of Public Works in April 2008.  In this role, he is responsible for the offices of Solid Waste Services, Transportation, Fleet Services and the Quality of Life Bond Program.

Prior to his appointment as Public Works Commissioner, Mr. Basista served as Deputy Commissioner in the City of Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management, with responsibility for strategic planning and performance management reporting for the Department; site development policy and plan review in support of economic development; the sewer system inspection and rehabilitation program with annual capital funding of $80 million; and management of the Program Management Team (PMT) contract for the Clean Water Atlanta Initiative, ensuring overall consent decree compliance.

Mr. Basista previously served as Vice President of a global engineering firm, providing program management services to municipal clients, including 4 years as the City of Atlanta’s consultant program manager for the Clean Water Atlanta consent decree program. He has 32 years of professional experience in planning, design, construction and program management services for municipal public works agencies.
