Mayor Kasim Reed Appears on ‘The Axe Files’ Podcast with David Axelrod

ATLANTA – The City of Atlanta announced today that Mayor Kasim Reed is the featured interview in Episode 127 of ‘The Axe Files’ podcast with host David Axelrod, published today. The interview was recorded when Mayor Reed visited the University of Chicago Institute of Politics for a panel discussion about the future of the Democratic Party.

David Axelrod, former senior advisor and strategist for President Barack Obama and current Director of the Institute of Politics, moderated the discussion, which included Mayor Pete Buttigieg of South Bend, IN; Honorable Patrick Murphy, former Undersecretary of the Army and former U.S. Congressman; and Symone Sanders, former National Press Secretary for Bernie Sanders and Strategist for Priorities USA. The panel discussion was part of the Institute’s speaker and event series, “America in the Trump Era.”

“I was so pleased to return to the University of Chicago Institute of Politics for these important conversations,” said Mayor Reed. “David Axelrod is one of our most talented and accomplished political strategists, and I am a strong supporter of the Institute’s mission of engaging young people in our political system. I offer David my thanks for inviting me to join the podcast, and for giving me the opportunity to have a candid, thoughtful conversation with fellow elected officials and Democratic strategists about the future of our party.”

The Axe Files podcast is co-sponsored by the Institute of Politics and by CNN. Originally launched in September 2015, The Axe Files is one of the most popular political podcasts in the United States, with recent guests including then-President Obama, former Secretary of State Madeline Albright, and many more leading figures in politics and the media. The critically-acclaimed podcast is available at, through the Institute of Politics website at, and through dozens of podcast apps for Apple and Android phones.

Previously, Mayor Reed served as a Fellow at the Institute of Politics during its Winter 2014 session. The Fellows Program presents a unique opportunity for leading political figures to spend an academic quarter in residence at the University of Chicago. Fellows draw on their first-hand experiences, research and professional networks to share their unique and insightful perspectives on politics and policy in action.

Since its launch in January 2013, the IOP has hosted 79 Fellows, including former RNC Chairman Michael Steele, former speechwriter for President Obama Jon Favreau, former CNN correspondent Jessica Yellin, GOP strategist Stuart Stevens, former Pakistani Ambassador to the U.S. Husain Haqqani, and former New York City Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson.

About the Institute of Politics
Created by former White House Senior Advisor and Obama campaign strategist David Axelrod (AB ’76), the Institute of Politics formally opened in January 2013. The goal of the Institute is to enrich the political discourse and to help inspire a new generation of leaders by providing opportunities for students to engage with the leading public servants and political practitioners of our time. The Institute seeks to do this through three principal means: public lectures and panel discussions; a program for visiting fellows; and student internships and civic engagement opportunities.
