EARTH DAY ATLANTA

A SPECIAL THANKS TO OUR ATLANTA EARTH DAY SPONSORS!

MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR:

Atlanta’s future is a bright and booming one but I know that our long-term success is directly linked to our commitment to improving our environmental quality of life. Urban city leaders across the country are examining the challenges of transportation, water, and air quality with environmental solutions that work.

I believe that sound environmental programs improve the quality of life for residents, visitors and generations to come. By reducing traffic congestion, we reduce air and water pollution. By implementing efficient waste management practices and reclaiming resources traditionally hauled off as waste, we increase energy efficiency.

The City of Atlanta is committed to "being green" with environmental initiatives and programs that reduce operational expenses and preserve our planet. We are diligently working to maximize our resources and eliminate wasteful expenditures. As we continue to grow, we want to do so responsibly as well as while addressing the economic benefits that can come with environmental programs.

Georgia is a leader in the recycling industry. Georgia’s paper industry is responsible for $10 billion in annual shipments of paper products, employs 25,000 employees with an annual payroll of $1 billion, and consumed 2.7 million tons of recovered paper in 2003 or 7.7 percent of the total recovered paper used in the U.S. Atlanta, as a catalyst for public/private partnerships and a model for other municipalities in Georgia, will help the environmental industry in Atlanta and the State of Georgia grow stronger, opening new doors to job opportunities and boosting market development.

We are working to become one of the most livable, green cities in America. Our opportunity is boundless. We are the third largest metro area with the most Fortune 500 companies in the nation, we have boundless opportunity, we enjoy great weather, prioritize an affordable cost of living and most importantly we are a community of diverse and welcoming people.

The Hopi Indians have a saying, "Together with all nations we protect both land and life, and hold the world in balance." I encourage all of you to make a commitment and get involved, together we can hold Atlanta in balance so that future generations will continue to come here to live, work, play and learn.
