City of Atlanta Municipal Carbon Footprint
On March 17, 2009, Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin announced the City of Atlanta municipal carbon footprint. The total greenhouse gas emissions for Atlanta city government in 2007 came to 540,000 metric tons. That establishes a carbon footprint baseline for Atlanta government, which aims to reduce emissions 7 percent by 2012.
Goals for Atlanta city government to achieve by the end of 2009 include:
- 10 percent drop in energy use in general fund* facilities through low/no-cost conservation measures yielding $300,000 to $500,000 in annual savings
- 5 percent drop in water use in general fund facilities (state projected yield in terms of annual savings)
- 3 percent drop in fossil fuels used by municipal fleet yielding $267,000 in annual savings
- At least two renewable energy demonstration projects
- 10 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in general fund facilities
