Public Invited to Plant Trees for Georgia Arbor Day Celebration
On Friday, February 16 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m., the City of Atlanta will join a coalition of volunteers and students to plant 100 large trees in Freedom Park and give away seedlings in honor of Georgia Arbor Day.
Atlanta is known for its comprehensive tree care program and was named a “Tree City” by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Expert arborists will teach volunteers and students how to properly plant, mulch and water trees to facilitate long-term health. To volunteer, just show up ready to get dirty!
Strategically placed trees can have a positive economic, social and environmental impact. Some “tree” facts:
- Just three trees strategically placed around a home can decrease utility bills by 50 percent. Residential property values can increase 5 – 20 percent if trees are in the landscape.
- Crime rates decrease in areas with more greenery.
- Access to green spaces relieves the symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), resulting in better concentration.
- Each year, an acre of trees absorbs the amount of carbon produced by driving a car 26,000 miles.
- Trees reduce the amount of water runoff from rain and clean the water that does run off, saving billions of dollars otherwise needed for storm water control and water treatment facilities.

The blood drive is open to metro area public safety and fire personnel as well as the public. APD will host their drive in the lobby of City Hall East, 675 Ponce de Leon Avenue, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. AFR will host their drive in the auditorium of the Atlanta Fire Academy, 407 Ashwood Avenue, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
