Internships Still Needed for Mayor’s Summer Employment and Training Program

As of Monday, approximately 1000 Atlanta Public Schools (APS) students began competitive summer internships and training programs at organizations throughout Atlanta and the metro area as participants in the 2007 Mayor’s Youth Summer Employment and Training Program.

For the third consecutive year, businesses partnered with the City to provide funding and summer internships for this one-of-a-kind program. Over 100 companies have joined the City, the Atlanta Workforce Development Agency (AWDA), the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce (MACOC) and ajcjobs.com.

“The summer employment and training program is made possible thanks to our corporate partners,” said Mayor Shirley Franklin. “Through their generous contributions, we are able to provide Atlanta youth with an opportunity to gain professional experiences in an array of industries that will better prepare them for their next phase in life.”

In addition to internships, the program provides valuable early career training. Training programs include a Healthcare certification component, facilitated by Atlanta Technical College; ArtsCooL, facilitated by the City Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA), for students with interest in performing, visual and media arts; and Lifeguard, Police and Fire Cadet certifications, facilitated through departments of the City of Atlanta.

Internship locations are still needed. If your company is interested in providing a valuable summer experience for an APS student, please call Pat Koch at 404.880.7235 or email PKoch@atlantaga.gov. For more information on the Mayor’s Youth Program, please visit mayorsyouthprogram.org.

Atlanta Police Prepare for Americas Competitiveness Forum

In preparation for the inaugural Americas Competitiveness Forum in Atlanta - June 11 through 13 – the Atlanta Police Department (APD) has led a month-long, multi-agency, logistical planning process to ensure a safe and secure conference.

The Americas Competitiveness Forum is expected to draw hundreds of minister-level government officials from the 34 countries of the Western Hemisphere. Officials will meet with representatives from the private sector, academia and the civic community to explore cutting-edge ideas and best practices that will spark innovation, increase economic prosperity and enhance competitiveness.

APD has collaborated with multiple public safety agencies to ensure the conference runs smoothly. The multi-agency public safety team will oversee event logistics that include everything from police officer positioning, food and water for public safety officials, extra radios, cars and protection services for participants.

“Atlanta has always welcomed people and commerce. Hosting the Americas Competitiveness Forum where officials from throughout the hemisphere will gather to discuss policies and strategies to promote free enterprise and attract investment speaks to our open doors,” said Mayor Shirley Franklin. “APD and our public safety partners have worked diligently to ensure successful management of the conference logistics and we look forward to a safe and productive conference.”

Atlanta was selected to host the inaugural forum by the U.S. Department of Commerce in November 2006. Atlanta was chosen based on its commitment to embracing best practices and its success in leveraging public-private partnerships to foster innovation and business development.

City Departments Receive Best-in-Class Awards

Two City of Atlanta departments – Planning and Community Development (DPCD) and Public Works (DPW) – recently received awards for their best practices policies and visionary leadership.

The Atlanta Urban Design Commission, a unit in the DPCD, was awarded the 2007 “Georgia Preservation Award” by the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation (GHTP) for their research on the BeltLine History Resources Survey. The BeltLine Survey involved archival research, windshield surveys and neighborhood histories to determine and explain the significance of the historic resources in areas slated for redevelopment. The BeltLine is a visionary project that will connect more than 40 historic neighborhoods with transit, trails and parks.

Motor Transport Services (MTS), a division of the DPW, will receive an award for “Specialized Training - Designing Your Own Curriculum” at the 9th Annual California Fleet Management conference. DPW receives the award for its Automotive Electrical Class, a training curriculum developed by the department for employees. DPW recently held a recognition ceremony for 15 DPW employees who completed the curriculum.
