Conservation Makes Sense to Atlanta Water Customers
Atlanta is heeding Mayor Shirley Franklin’s call to conserve water according to the City’s most recent usage numbers, which show that water use through November 2007 averaged 94.18 million gallons per day, down from 105.58 million per day in November 2006.
Usage for November 2007 was 10 percent lower than that for November 2006; however, water use is still 3 percent higher than the City’s baseline goal (average usage for December 2006-March 2007). In October, Mayor Franklin vowed that the City would cut its use by 10 percent and called on Atlanta water customers to cut their individual usage by 10 percent.
The Mayor’s usage goal for the City is 91.5 million gallons a day. “I congratulate Atlantans on their efforts so far and encourage them to keep looking for new ways to conserve water,” Mayor Franklin said. “We all need to begin to see conservation not as a temporary inconvenience but as a way of life.”
Department of Watershed Management (DWM) officials credit the decline to customer conservation, high-density development and new water-efficient construction. DWM serves customers inside the city limits, as well as Fairburn, Hapeville, Union City, Sandy Springs and Coweta, Clayton, Fayette and unincorporated Fulton counties.
