Effective November 1st, the City of Atlanta began providing additional beds and resources at two existing shelters to house homeless people during the winter weather season and will open another emergency shelter facility this week.
However, due to the possibility of freezing weather tomorrow, Mayor Shirley Franklin wishes to reiterate the availability of additional space at existing shelters to take care of people during the inclement weather. If extreme conditions persist, the City is prepared to open a recreation facility to handle overflow shelter needs.
Persons seeking shelter can call from any local pay phone for assistance:
1-800-448-0636
Once contacted, transportation will be provided to available space.
The City is also prepared to move into action should the weather dictate. Sanding trucks and crews are on standby as well as police and fire for emergency assistance.
