Mayor Shirley Franklin’s Statement on the Death of Mrs. Coretta Scott King

“I join with all of the people of Atlanta in expressing our condolences to the King family and in recognizing the tremendous contributions Coretta Scott King has made to our city, our nation and our world.  Her legacy will continue to inspire us as we go about our work in this new century.”

“Mrs. King has been a strong and graceful force encouraging women in public life and an advocate for people who are poor and people who are left out. I have looked to her, as many Atlantans have, for her strength of spirit, knowing that if she could continue to be hopeful, given the struggles in her own life, that we really don’t have anything to complain about.  It is important for us to see the possibilities of a beloved community where all come to the table together for each others benefit, a vision shared by both Coretta Scott King and Martin Luther King Jr..”

“In honor of Mrs. King, all flags at City of Atlanta facilities have been lowered to half-staff. Our thoughts and prayers are with the King family.”
