The City of Atlanta and Partners Continue to Respond to Those Displaced by Hurricane Katrina

The City of Atlanta, members of the faith-based community, state and local officials and other human service providers have been active in supporting the American Red Cross in their role as the primary emergency responder to the devastation in the Gulf Area.

The City of Atlanta's Adamsville Recreation Center on Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive has served as a center for connecting those impacted by Hurricane Katrina with service providers from the surrounding area.  The recreation center is providing multiple services including, job placement, student services, food stamps, Medicare, Medicaid, general store and internet connections.  Volunteer Grady Hospital and Emory University Physicians are onsite for medical assistance.

The community-wide effort has been working since last Tuesday to provide the necessary resources for those coming to metro Atlanta. This past weekend the City of Atlanta at Adamsville Recreation Center and Atlanta Workforce Development Agency (AWDA) serviced approximately 2,000 individuals and families and nearly 1,000 volunteers have given their time.

Just this weekend alone, volunteers have sorted over 8,000 pounds of food, sorted over 3,000 pounds of clothes and served over 500 families through the general store.

Atlanta Workforce Development Agency continues to offer job training, computer access, resume assistance, internet and local phone service and is holding a job fair tomorrow, Tuesday, September 6 from 9:00 am-12:00pm at 818 Pollard Blvd., Atlanta, GA 30315.  Over 15 companies will be available and ready to hire onsite.

The response has been a collaboration between many who simply saw an urgent need and responded. Other city departments active in the relief effort include the Department of Public Works, the Atlanta Police Department and Atlanta Fire Rescue, which has sent more than 30 firefighters and several fire trucks down to the Gulf area to assist other public safety officials.

The Adamsville Recreation Center will continue to serve as a site for those seeking assistance.  For those seeking to volunteer or contribute monetarily to the relief area, please call 1.800.HELP.NOW or
