Public Meetings to Discuss the Future of Fort McPherson.
In November 2005, the Base Closure and Realignment Commission voted to close Fort McPherson. Subsequently, the McPherson Planning and Redevelopment Authority (MPLRA), a non-profit corporation, was formed on behalf of the cities of Atlanta and East Point, Fulton County and the State of Georgia. The MPLRA is responsible for considering the needs of the local communities, creating a redevelopment plan for the reuse and economic development of the real estate and serving as the sole point of contact with the Department of the Army base reuse planning.
Last month, the MPLRA held a three-day workshop to allow the community to participate in the planning process. The workshops resulted in three alternatives for potential reuse of Fort McPherson based on community input. The three scenarios highlighted (1) a mixed-use neighborhood, (2) an employment center, and (3) a regional destination.
The upcoming meetings will not be a repeat of the March meetings. These meetings will provide new information about the plans to redevelop Fort McPherson. Community input is vital in shaping the future of this important community resource.
