Freedom Park is one of the largest public green spaces in a major metropolitan area. The park maintenance crew has been awarded Park of the Month for the maintenance in the 2 acres encompassing a trail. The trails provide walkers and joggers with connecting paths from Moreland Avenue to Candler Park.
“Freedom Park is a popular park for the community who are exercise enthusiasts,” says Ken Gillett, City of Atlanta’s Office of Parks Director. “The park enhancements made by the crew this season show the crew’s commitment to making our parks clean, safe and pleasing places to exercise and relax.”
Park maintenance includes cutting the grass, weeding and pruning trees; this crew installed a picnic bench and planted various flowers throughout the park. The crew collects rain water in 5 gallon buckets to water the flowers. The water conservation process was a factor in the crew earning the Park of the Month honors.
The Park of the Month program runs from May through October and is managed by the City of Atlanta’s Office of Parks along with Park Pride, a non-profit organization that works with the community on parks and green space. The other nominees submitted to the Office of Parks for the Park of the Month included Ellsworth Park, Rosel Fann Park, Oakland Cemetery (Lion’s Square) and Barbara A. McCoy Park. Park Pride reviewed all the nominations and one park is recommended for Park of the Month honors. The July’s Park of the Month Freedom Park will be eligible for Park of Year offered by Park Pride.
