The City of Atlanta Proclaims Olympic Day and Hosts City Celebration

As the host city for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, the City of Atlanta and Mayor Franklin are proud to celebrate World Olympic Day on June 23, 2009 during a special event at Centennial Olympic Park featuring three very special Olympic athletes.

In observance of the day, 100 children from several Atlanta summer camps will participate in a series of Olympic Day activities from 11:00 a.m. - 12 noon.  At 12:00 noon, Mayor Franklin and our invited Olympic athletes will speak with the children during a news conference about the importance of excellence, friendship and respect.

At the urging of Chicago Mayor Richard Daley, during the U.S. Conference of Mayors in January in Washington, D.C., Mayor Franklin joined with fellow mayors across the country in a collective pledge of support for hosting the Olympic Games in Chicago in 2016.  Today’s community celebration all across the nation will send a clear message to the International Olympic Committee that Atlanta and the United States of America support the Chicago 2016 bid for the Olympic Games.  An official announcement of the site for the 2016 Olympic Games is forthcoming in October 2009.

Olympic Day is a worldwide commemoration of the founding of the Modern Olympic Games.  National Olympic Committees throughout the world will also participate in the international celebration.
