Office of Solid Waste Services
The Office of Solid Waste Services is responsible for the collection and disposal of solid waste within the City of Atlanta. Additionally, the office provides vacant lot clean-up; maintenance of various rights-of-way specified in the Atlanta City Code and dead animal removal and disposal. The office also oversees landfill operations; the City’s recycling program; enforcing codes related to lawn maintenance and the disposal of yard trimmings; and assists in citywide emergency operations. Administration
The Administration Division is comprised of Education and Enforcement, Waste Reduction and Management Analysis. These units are responsible for code enforcement and compliance, maintaining contracts devoted to waste reduction, recycling and composting, route analysis, mapping, off-site plan review, budget preparation and developing educational publications and activities.
Operations
The Operations Division is responsible for household garbage collection and bulk rubbish and yard trimming collection. Operational divisions are organized by function in order to increase their efficiency in operations and service delivery.
Starting Garbage Collection Service
New property owners can fax or mail a copy of their settlement statement to the Customer Service Division in order to obtain a garbage container ("Herbie Curbie"):

Garbage collection occurs weekly. Herbie Curbies should be placed on curb by 7p.m. the previous day and removed from curb by 7 p.m. on collection day.
FY2009 Solid Waste Collection Schedule
In accordance with the recently implemented citywide furlough plan, the Department of Public Works-Solid Waste Services has adjusted operating hours and service delivery.
Effective Monday, January 5, 2009 Solid Waste Services will implement the following schedule and service changes:
- Weekly garbage collection will continue, but on a four (4) day schedule
- Recycling and Yard Waste collection will change from weekly to every other week, on the customer’s scheduled collection day, per the new Solid Waste Collections Calendar (pdf).
- Friday pickups are being absorbed within the four (4) day schedule. There are approximately 20,000 customers who currently receive Friday pick up service. A separate notice will be delivered to these customers indicating their new pick up day.
- There are approximately 5,000 customers who receive back yard pick up service. Their pick up service may or may not change depending upon their address. These customers will receive a separate notice if there are any changes to their scheduled pick up service.
