ATLDOT Launches Vision Zero Action Plan with Community Survey

Plan seeks community input to reduce vehicle-related deaths and injuries.

ATLANTA—The Atlanta Department of Transportation (ATLDOT) announced the public launch of the planning process for its Atlanta Vision Zero Action Plan. The plan will serve as a blueprint for safety improvements and policies to eliminate fatal and serious injury crashes from Atlanta’s roadways.

In 2020, the Atlanta City Council affirmed its commitment to implementing Vision Zero, a systems-based approach to eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries through safer street design, speed management and other proven strategies.

Community experiences and input are vital in developing the Vision Zero Action Plan. The City encourages residents, the business community and visitors to share their stories and help identify opportunities by visiting ATLVisionZero.com to document safety concerns via an interactive community input map and brief survey.

This information gathering effort is a major element in the three-phase planning process:

  • Project Initiation
  • Implementation Planning
  • Plan Completion

Project Initiation began in December of 2022 with ATLDOT’s first Vision Zero Task Force meeting. Comprised of community and organizational partners, the task force will guide the planning process and help finalize actions and strategies. As part of the initiation phase, the project team is updating the High Injury Network, which identifies areas around the city that are most susceptible to vehicle-related injuries and deaths. Results will be shared with the public during Phase 2.

Implementation Planning includes community workshops and pop-up events to present recommendations and receive input. All events are open to the public. The first of these information-gathering events, a pop-up in the Oakland City MARTA Station, was held on February 13, 2023. Two virtual community workshops are scheduled for Tuesday, March 7, at 12:00 p.m. and Thursday, March 9, at 6:00 p.m. Details on how to join the meeting can be found at ATLVisionZero.com.

Plan Completion is scheduled for October of 2023. The Atlanta City Council will consider adoption of the final plan following a virtual community workshop and public review and comment period.

Community members can review project information and provide input throughout the planning process at the project website. Questions can be emailed to the project team at atldot@atlantaga.gov with “ATL Vision Zero” in the subject line.
