Keep Pipes Free of Fats, Oils and Grease This Holiday Season
ATLANTA – The holiday season is approaching, and the City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management advises residents to dispose of food waste properly. Fats, oils and grease, also known as FOG, can clog sewer pipes and cause overflows. More than 50 percent of sanitary sewer spills in Atlanta are caused by FOG.
Watershed Management urges those cooking for the holidays to pour liquid FOG into a container lined with aluminum foil, place the container in the freezer and discard in the trash can once it is frozen. Residents should also wipe greasy pots, pans and dishes with a paper towel before washing.
“Fats, oils and grease down the kitchen sink after cooking holiday meals can create blockages and backups in sewer pipes,” said Commissioner Jo Ann Macrina. “Properly disposing of FOG will help you avoid expensive plumber visits, prevent blockages in the City’s sewer system and protect our rivers, creeks and streams.”
Food items such as salad dressing, gravy, butter, meat fats and ice cream are also considered FOG. When FOG is poured down drains, it solidifies in pipes and restricts the flow of wastewater, which can cause sewage to overflow into yards, streets, homes and ultimately our local waterways.
To reduce the harmful effects of FOG pollution year-round, incorporate disposal tips into everyday cooking habits.
See our video for more information on how to properly dispose of FOG.
The City of Atlanta wishes everyone a FOG-clog free holiday season.
