Mayor Kasim Reed Breaks Ground on First Renew Atlanta Infrastructure Bond Project
ATLANTA – Mayor Kasim Reed, Councilmember C.T. Martin, Public Works Commissioner Richard Mendoza, and more than one hundred community members celebrated the groundbreaking of the first Renew Atlanta Infrastructure Bond project today. Following the groundbreaking, crews began preparation to resurface Lynhurst Drive at Cascade Road SW.
“More than eight out of ten voters approved the infrastructure bond to renew Atlanta in March of this year,” said Mayor Reed. “We’re starting in Southwest Atlanta, but soon residents and visitors will see projects underway across Atlanta. We will build and repair bridges, fix roads and sidewalks, build more than 30 miles of new bicycle lanes, and synchronize traffic signals. Together, we will renew Atlanta.”
In addition to resurfacing the full street, Public Works crews will install pedestrian street lights at the entrance of Lynhurst Drive at Cascade Road SW and Lynhurst Drive at Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive, will repair ADA ramps and install new sidewalks. Because of increased traffic flow on the street, the City will also add a left turn phase to the traffic signal on Cascade Road eastbound to Lynhurst Drive.
“I have been a champion for infrastructure projects in my district for years,” said Councilmember C.T. Martin, who joined Mayor Reed at the event today. “I am proud that the first project of the infrastructure bond broke ground in Southwest Atlanta.”
“The City is excited to kick off the Renew Atlanta infrastructure bond with this important project,” said Commissioner Richard Mendoza. “We have an aggressive schedule for projects across Atlanta to ensure our residents and visitors see results quickly. As we work to make key improvements, upgrades and repairs across the city, we will take every opportunity to make the impact of this infrastructure bond extend farther.”
In order to increase the impact of bond dollars, the Department of Public Works will leverage additional funds and will coordinate with the Department of Watershed Management to improve drainage conditions along Lynhurst Drive and other roads in the city.
