Atlanta Police Assist Elderly and Low-Income to Sign Up for Valuable Emergency Service

“The Community Liaison Unit Holds Its First Smart911 Registration Drive”

Atlanta, GA – The Atlanta Police Department’s Community Liaison Unit (CLU) will conduct a Smart911 registration drive Friday, February 24, 2012, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Baptist Towers located at 1811 Myrtle Drive, SW. The CLU Officers will be equipped with mobile data terminals and assist the senior citizen residents with registering for Smart911.

The Smart911 system was unveiled to citizens in December 2011. The free Smart911 system allows residents to create a “household safety profile” with information 911 dispatchers can relay to police, firefighters and EMTs responding to emergencies. This additional information will provide first responders with enhanced information to identify a situation and better gauge an appropriate response.

“Providing this invaluable service to our senior citizens is critical,” said Community Services Division Deputy Chief Renee Propes. “In an emergency situation, every second counts. Smart911 will help ensure first responders arrive on the scene with better insight of the situation at hand to more effectively address the needs of the citizens.”

The Department recognizes not every citizen has Internet or computer access readily available to them. This is the first in a series of the Smart911 registration drives that the CLU will conduct over the next 12 months to make certain that Atlanta is a safe city for everyone.

A full-service police agency, the Department has adopted a community-oriented philosophy and relies heavily upon community input and collaborative problem-solving strategies. It is through heightened community involvement in public safety matters that the Atlanta Police Department will most effectively address its many priorities, including, but not limited to youth-related crime, domestic violence and the perception of crime in Atlanta.

With an authorized strength of more than 1,959 sworn officers, the Atlanta Police Department is the largest law enforcement agency in the State of Georgia, and a dedicated, high-profile force for positive change in our communities.
