Southwest NPU Update

Overview

The Department of City Planning (DCP) is working on a comprehensive effort to strengthen the Southwest Atlanta community by:

  • Working with residents to design a strategy for community-led area planning and visioning;
  • Coordinating community development efforts;
  • Curating an area-specific educational program;
  • Launching a year-long outreach and awareness campaign;
  • Providing technical support; and
  • Realigning neighborhood planning units in the southwest quadrant.

Background
In the nearly 50 years since NPUs were created, boundaries have not been adjusted to accommodate population shifts, shared spaces, or growth corridors, resulting in widely disparate resident populations and varying levels of strength, functionality, and effectiveness. This project will help strengthen and equip southwest neighborhoods to manage the change rapidly occurring in areas around the City.

Opportunity
Current conditions offer the opportunity for DCP to encourage resident input for the Campbellton Road corridor; increase awareness of engagement opportunities; bolster comprehensive planning efforts for major corridors, commercial districts and residential neighborhoods in southwest Atlanta; empower neighborhood organizations; and promote equity.
