Hartsfield-Jackson honored for contribution to Gateway Center
Atlanta Regional Commission cites rental car center, ATL SkyTrain in project’s success
ATLANTA — Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport received a Development of Excellence Award Honorable Mention/“Exceptional Merit for a Public-Private Partnership” from the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) at its State of the Region breakfast on Friday. The award honored the Airport and other entities responsible for the Gateway Center in College Park.
The Department of Aviation at Hartsfield-Jackson worked with the other honorees — College Park Business and Industrial Development Authority (BIDA) and Grove Street Partners — to ensure a successful transportation component of the Gateway Center, which is connected to the Airport and its rental car center via the elevated ATL SkyTrain.
“We are honored to be recognized as part of the team that made the Gateway Center the successful hub of business and conference activity that it increasingly is becoming,” said Aviation General Manager Louis Miller. “Hartsfield-Jackson is committed to being a good neighbor to the surrounding communities, and helping to boost economic development is rewarding. We plan to remain an active partner in this project and to promote its ongoing growth and the reinvigoration of the area surrounding it.”
The ARC jury members noted that the Gateway Center has great potential for economic development in the area by creating the foundation for an aerotropolis of businesses and convention centers linked by streamlined transportation options in College Park.
The jury members said that Hartsfield-Jackson “played a key role in the ultimate success of this project” through its decade-plus work to create the rental car center and the ATL SkyTrain. “These investments helped make the Gateway Center development a reality and an appealing choice for this award and are part of the larger story.”
