Spring 2022 Interns
Our Georgia State University (GSU) interns have done it again!
The Department of Atlanta Information Management (AIM) Training Manager Kim Nelson refers to this class as the “A-TERNS,” AIM - Top Employees Recognizing New Solutions. They did a fantastic job and finished the 2022 spring semester as champions.
During their time with AIM, they successfully contributed to at least six technology projects, including the Department of Public Safety and Justice video surveillance systems, AIM financial administration, City of Atlanta data transformation, Operation Excellence Apprentice Program, City of Atlanta LGBTQ webpage development, and so much more!
A-TERNS, your innovative contributions to the projects will significantly impact the way AIM conducts business and provides services to our customers.
As graduation drew closer, it was time to expose me to professional environments. I got lucky enough to work with a city that I loved interning with AIM. I have been tasked with helping log and inventory camera systems around the City. I have loved the exposure that I have received and some of the connections that I have made. Mentors like Diane and Kimberlyn have gone out of their way to ensure I have answered any questions and have been exposed to some very successful people who have offered me advice along my career journey.
There has been an emphasis on career exposure, leadership, and personal growth. No matter where the future takes me, whether it is working as a consultant helping small businesses grow around the United States or moving on to something else, I know that I am equipped, confident, and have some great minds to fall back on in the City.
I met and heard so many amazing people throughout the internship, such as Ron Henry, the interim chief information security officer for the City of Atlanta. He took time to have an 'Ask-The-Chief' session with us, and I enjoyed hearing about his experience and advice. I'm thankful for AIM giving me this opportunity to get some experience in a working environment in the technology industry.
I enjoy playing soccer and reading books in my spare time because I'm an avid reader.
During my internship at the City of Atlanta, I had the opportunity to work with Ms. Kimberlyn on developing an Apprenticeship Program for AIM and with Ms. Martisse on organizing the SOP process. It has been a challenging but exciting experience building an Apprenticeship Program from scratch. By understanding the key components and top technology programs, we want to make sure the apprentices receive the most rewarding training from AIM. Everyone was willing to help me even with their busy schedule and have regular check-in meetings to ensure my project was on track. I’m very grateful and fortunate to have a caring team and unique projects.
I want to thank Deputy Chief Information Officer Daphne Rackley for allowing me to learn and work underneath her and supporting the fantastic work that was already in process. I would also like to thank the AIM intern program lead, Kimberlyn Nelson, for helping and providing us with an environment to network and gain experience.
During my time at GSU, I had the opportunity to be an intern at the City of Atlanta, and it contributed to my personal growth and career path. As an intern at AIM, I learned how to do research and present my analysis to AIM Training Manager Kimberlyn Nelson and Chief Technology Officer Brittaney Carter to help them with projects. I also gained insight into navigating my career from Interim Chief Information Security Officer Ron Henry. They were beyond helping me out during the internship to achieve my goals and improve my interpersonal and technical skills. I appreciate this opportunity and the skills I’ve gained that will make me successful in my career path later on.
