Historic Preservation

We recommend that you use our GIS site to research your property and determine which zoning categories apply, including historic preservation zoning categories like Historic District, Landmark District, etc. Visit the Property Info interactive map at gis.atlantaga.gov/propinfo

The historic preservation regulations that could apply to your property are based on which Historic or Landmark District you are located or which individual historic building you are. To find out which type of historic preservation designation you are in, use our GIS website and the Property Info interactive map at gis.atlantaga.gov/propinfo.

Then, look up the specific requirements for that designation from Chapter 20 of the City's Municode website.

Your scope of work will determine which specific historic preservation permit (called a “Certificate of Appropriateness”) you might need and whether a public hearing with the Urban Design Commission is required or if the review can be handled by the Staff of the Historic Preservation Studio.

The initial designation or expansion of a Historic or Landmark District requires sustained engagement with the Historic Preservation Studio.
