The City of Atlanta strives to facilitate affordable and equitable housing opportunities for all.

One can understand a city—its values and problems, its history and potential future—by observing the physical ways it is designed, including the type of housing options that exist and whether they have been designed for inclusion or exclusion. Perhaps no other design element carries more weight for an individual than housing.

Why is housing so important?

"Housing is a critical element of a person's life. It impacts everything from travel time and commute options for work to a person's ability to quickly and easily access fresh food. Any city that aims at creating a more equitable, inclusive, and resilient place to live must start with examining how its housing and land-use policies mitigate or exacerbate social and economic inequalities. Atlanta City Design Housing is an exploration of how housing in Atlanta might be reimagined to work better for everyone that wants to call Atlanta home."

What housing resources does the City offer to residents?

Affordable Housing: A Resource Guide for Residents

Released in December 2020, DCP's Affordable Housing Guide provides information about affordable housing whether you are seeking to rent a place, purchase a home, or need assistance staying in your home. The guide features dozens of programs and organizations that help residents and provides detailed contact information. To read, download, print, and share our Affordable Housing Guide, click here.

What resources are available for developers?

Partner Organizations & Helpful Links

DCP is committed to helping residents, but we don't provide every housing-related service. Below are are a few of our partner organizations who offer services for residents, renters, homeowners, unsheltered persons, and developers:

Atlanta Housing: Our City's Housing Authority

AH provides and facilitates affordable housing resources for nearly 22,000 low-income households comprised of approximately 50,000 people. Visit Atlanta Housing at atlantahousing.org

Invest Atlanta: Our City's Economic Development Authority

IA provides programs like homebuyer assistance, affordable apartments, and home repair. You can read more about these programs on pages 18–19 of our Affordable Housing Guide, or visit Invest Atlanta directly at investatlanta.com.

Partners for Home

PFH is an organization working to end homelessness in Atlanta through their Continuum of Care Coordinated Entry program. Staff at coordinated entry centers are trained to place an unhoused person with the shelter that is most appropriate for their needs. To learn more, read pages 24–27 of our Affordable Housing Guide. (And consider printing a few copies to place in Little Free Libraries or other public areas where people may need this information!)

Atlanta City Design: Aspiring to the Beloved Community

On September 6, 2017 we released a plan that envisions what Atlanta could look like in the future. The Atlanta City Design will help guide upcoming decisions on development, investments and influence policy to ensure intentional design for the city.
