In observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday, Recreation and Cultural Centers will be closed, Thursday, November 22, 2012 and Friday, November 23, 2012. Centers will resume their regular schedule on Saturday, November 24, 2012.

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs has closed the pool and fitness center of the Martin Luther King Jr. Natatorium indefinitely, citing safety and security issues raised in a building assessment from a private engineering firm. The Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center will remain open, and is not impacted by the closing of the pool and fitness center.

Mayor Kasim Reed announced today the launch of the redesign competition for the City of Atlanta’s Phoenix Award. This design contest is open to students enrolled in an accredited college or university in metropolitan Atlanta.

The City of Atlanta’s Office of Cultural Affairs has provided 250,000 Atlanta Public Schools (APS) students admission to high-end cultural field trips through its Cultural Experience Project (CEP), a project aimed at enhancing classroom learning to elementary, middle, and high school students. CEP provides students with experiences at no cost through the generosity of public and private funding sources.

The Reed Administration, in partnership with Council Member Lamar Willis, has proposed sweeping amendments to the ParkAtlanta contract that are intended to improve customer service, increase transparency of the appeals process, hold the vendor accountable and through improved technology and signage, create a better, simpler user experience. The Transportation Committee approved 21 amendments to the ParkAtlanta contract, and the measure will go before the full Atlanta City Council on Monday, November 19, 2012.

Mayor Kasim Reed announced today that the City of Atlanta has been awarded a $40,000 grant for a volunteer reading program at four local elementary schools – Mary M. Bethune, Dunbar, Hope-Hill and Thomasville Heights. Atlanta is one of eight U.S. cities awarded the “Third Grade Reads” grant and is designed to support mayors who are engaging volunteers to help children attain reading proficiency by the beginning of the fourth grade.

Mayor Kasim Reed announced today that the City of Atlanta has been awarded a $25,000 grant to engage volunteers in the city’s recycling initiative. The grant comes from Cities of Service, a bipartisan coalition of mayors committed to using service as a strategy, with funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies. Atlanta is one of 18 U.S. cities to be awarded a grant to support mayors who are harnessing the power of volunteers in a strategic way to address priority problems in their communities.
